Rotary is fun; the people make it an enjoyable experience!

Many lifelong friendships have emanated from belonging to a Rotary club such as ours.

Friendship

In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of our basic needs: the need for friendship. It is one of the two reasons Rotary was founded in 1905.

The Development of Ethics

Rotarians practise a Four Way Test, a test that governs our ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationships.

Business Development

The second reason for Rotary’s origination was business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary consists of a cross section of the business community, from all walks of life. Rotarians seek to help each other and collectively help others.

Personal Growth and Development

Membership of Rotary continues to provide opportunities for growth and education in human relations and personal development.

The Opportunity to Serve

Rotary is a service with the motto Service Above Self. Rotarians provide community service locally and internationally. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and to experience the self-fulfilment that comes from the process. It is a richly rewarding activity.

Fellowship

Every Rotary club and District has fellowship activities that provide a diversion from business life. Conferences, conventions and assemblies also provide good entertainment in addition to information, education and service.

Continuing Education

Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep members informed about community, national and world events. Guest speakers and timely topics are presented and discussed.

Overview of Rotary International

Rotary International is a volunteer organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world.

There are approximately 1.2 million Rotary club members belonging to 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

There are 1,164 clubs in Australia with 34,000 members.

Rotary celebrated its Centenary in 2005.

For the purposes of administration, Rotary clubs throughout the world are allocated into districts. A Rotary district covers a number of clubs within a defined geographical area.

Rotary was founded by Paul Harris in 1905. A lawyer in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Harris was raised in a rural village in Vermont. He envisaged a new kind of club for professionals that would rekindle the kindness, caring and friendship  he had known in his youth.

After meeting with three friends - a coal dealer, a merchant tailor and a mining engineer - they decided that they should meet periodically to enjoy camaraderie and to enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances. Meetings were rotated among their places of business and so the name Rotary came about and with it, the commitment to improve the lives of those less fortunate.
